Check out this Hamamelis virginiana, all snowy and in bloom, that I saw at work today. Common name : American Witch Hazel. Yes, Hamamelis is the plant used to make the facial astringent found in grocery stores. Hamamelis bark and leaves are tannin-rich. These tannins account for some of where the plant derives its astringent properties. Tea is tannin-rich, too. Ever felt your mouth pucker after sipping a mug of green or black tea that had been brewed too long? Tannins in in full effect!

Astringency is a great quality to look for in a medicinal plant when one would like to address inflammation, loose tissue or swelling, especially of the skin and gums. Astringency is tightening and toning, causing tissue to contract. I must say that it is a favorite herbal action of mine. This hamamelis may be my favorite late fall look yet this season.
